Sudha Murthy - A Unique Indian Author, Philanthropist, and Engineer

Sudha Murty and her siblings were looked after and raised by her parents and maternal grandparents. Her experiences of childhood became the historical basis for her first significant book named How I Taught My Grandmother to Read & Other Stories. Later on, she wrote several of her notable books in English and Kannada. Murty is a prolific fiction author in Kannada and English. Sudha Murthy started her career working as a computer scientist and engineer. When she applied in TELCO for the position of a Development Engineer, she wrote a postcard to the company’s chairman for the gender bias at TELCO, she was given a particular interview time and was hired. Sudha Murty was the first female engineer of India to be hired at India's largest auto manufacturer TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO), joining them as a Development Engineer in Pune and later had worked in Mumbai and Jamshedpur as well. 

She worked with the Walchand Group of Industries at Pune as Senior Systems Analyst. In an inauguration event of chairpersons of Ficci Ladies Organisation (FLO), Murty said that she was advised by J.R.D.Tata to join her husband when she left her job to assist her husband Narayana Murthy in setting up the startup company Infosys which completely transformed her life. He told her that “You are the only trustee of money and it always changes hands. When you are successful, give it back to the society that gave you so much goodwill”.

Her initiatives for the public health and philanthropic activities included putting up several, contributing to rural development efforts of the Government to provide library and computer facilities in Karnataka schools. She had written a novel named Dollar Sose ( meaning Dollar Daughter-in-law) – the was made into a TV series in 2001. Marathi Film “ Pitruroon” and Kannada film “Prathana” were made on her short stories. She is an avid movie buff and that she watched 365 movies in a year on her home theatre. In an interview with Filmfare, she said that she saw a film in its entirety like direction, screenplay editing, etc., she has 500 DVDs at home. She also said that if she had not chosen to support her husband in his efforts to set up Infosys she would be a film journalist.

  • 2000: ‘Karnataka Rajyotsava’ State Award for achievement in the field of literature and social work.
  • 2006: R.K. Narayana's Award for Literature.
  • 2011: The Murty's were awarded the honorary LL.D (Doctor of Laws) degrees for their valuable contributions to promote formal legal education and scholarship in India. 
  • The Padma Shree by the President of India in March 2006.
  • 2019: IIT Kanpur conferred on her Honorary Degree (Honoris Causa) of Doctor of Science.
